Personal Statement
To me when working on the body you are thinking not just about the space or how a viewer perceives the piece but also how the wearer feels and what message you are trying to portray. A message I am keen to explore further in my work is sustainability; we never know what's going to happen in the future which is why it's so important as a young artist to fill that gap.
Through studying a foundation degree at Central Saint Martin's my work has developed so much and I have learnt an incredible depth to my work that I want to keep pushing and exploring. I have also learnt how research is an evolving process; day by day you could discover a piece of information which is paramount for that project. Specifically during our practitioner project involving Phoebe English; I discovered Rachel Whiteread who creates 'casts of space' using polystyrene and Willi Dorner who uses performance art to "leave imprints in the eyewitnesses memory without leaving any trace behind". Performance art is something I am particularly interested in as it's a way I could create my own research.
On foundation I grasped the concept that unconventional materials like tile adhesive, expanding foam or clay are really exciting ways to inform design development ideas as you can work with your hands into the material. This way my textile samples can really elevate my ideas and have allowed me to experiment with garment designs in an unconventional way for example the way the expanding foam creates chunky intertwining shapes may inform the silhouette of a garment or continuous knots.
Drawing is imperative in my work; learning this from past projects where I neglected drawing was such an important lesson. When creating marks on a page from observation I think you are instantly creating your own interpretation of something; your own idea. Doing a drawing day with John Booth I found to be such a useful experience learning that even a fashion illustration should still have some body proportions making it easier to do design development. I also learnt how important colour balance is and the use of colour; previously just chucking colour onto the page it now feels more considered.
Outside of my studies I regularly play netball and being team captain for two years in particular has enriched me with confidence, team work and a competitive spirit; now in the regional team I will continue to use these skills I have learnt throughout my time of studying fashion.
Also the aspect of collaboration is what I want to do while on the course; working in a group can be a great strength in work as when being constantly creative it's nice to get a new perspective of what I want to do instead of being stuck in a bubble. Collaboration also within industry is a perfect opportunity to gain experience and contacts from the course.
As a conscientious, hard working and self motivated student; I believe I would be a positive asset to your course. I feel excited for the challenges of university and to develop my studies further.
